Games and Gaming Lab, Glasgow (GGLab)
ActiveDescription
The Games and Gaming Lab is a research lab within the Arts Lab at the University of Glasgow. It promotes cross-disciplinary research into games and gaming, from tabletop to electronic media, from children to adults, and across periods from the ancient and modern worlds to the fantastic and the futuristic. The lab reports over 300 members, staff and students drawn from all four of the university's colleges alongside researchers at other universities internationally and people working in companies and organisations.
Its projects apply games to heritage, humanitarian and educational questions. Project HeritAIge, launched in June 2024, used artificial intelligence to turn a heritage site into a historical video game, with a responsible approach to AI stated as part of its design; other work has rebuilt the farm of Robert Burns in Minecraft, led a serious-gaming exercise developed with a United Nations humanitarian civil-military coordination body, and supported a peace-building game led elsewhere in the university. The lab also runs a public programme of events, including a student games summit and showcases of its current projects.
