Joint Enterprise Not Guilty by Association (JENGbA)
ActiveDescription
JENGbA (Joint Enterprise Not Guilty by Association) is a grassroots, volunteer-run campaign opposing the use of the Joint Enterprise legal doctrine, which it describes as common law used against common people in ways that make no common sense. The campaign was formed in response to a use of joint enterprise it characterises as unjust, unfair and discriminatory towards working-class and BAME communities, under which many of those convicted serve mandatory life sentences for crimes committed by others. The work was taken on mainly by women (mothers, sisters, aunties, cousins, alongside fathers and uncles) whose loved ones are imprisoned under the doctrine. As a not-for-profit campaign and support group, JENGbA offers support to the families and friends of those who believe they have been wrongfully convicted under Joint Enterprise; it states that it does not provide legal advice and is not an innocence project, though it may signpost people. It sends regular newsletters to serving prisoners and campaigns for reform of the law.
