Liberty
ActiveDescription
Liberty is the trading name of The National Council for Civil Liberties, an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation founded in 1934 and described as the UK's oldest human rights organisation. It challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to ensure everyone in the UK is treated fairly, bringing together campaigners, lawyers and policy experts to protect rights and hold those in power to account. It works in three main ways: taking landmark legal cases to challenge unjust laws, policies and practices in the courts; advising policymakers, coordinating coalitions and campaigning to shape legislation, including the Human Rights Act; and raising public awareness while supporting communities affected by rights-infringing policies. It houses Liberty Investigates, an editorially independent investigative journalism unit, and provides free legal information and workshops. Liberty operates as a democratically run membership association alongside the Civil Liberties Trust, a registered charity pursuing human rights and civil liberties work through research, policy, litigation, education and advice.
