WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments

Description

The World Health Organisation's (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments, established in 1995, is renowned for advocating healthy and sustainable communities. Operating within a built environment college, a unique setup amongst WHO's collaborating centres in Europe, the Centre is at the forefront of the growing domain of healthy urban planning.

The Centre's strategic activities encompass research, teaching, consultation, knowledge dissemination and publication, emphasising the nexus of health and planning. It cooperates with local authorities, planning consultancies, health authorities and communities across the UK, and maintains a connection with the broader WHO European Healthy Cities network.

The WHO Collaborating Centre is formally affiliated with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and participates in a network of 90 cities across the continent. Positioned within the UK's largest higher education planning department, the Centre has earned national recognition in elucidating the interconnectedness of health and planning, holding a strong record of collaboration with interests at various levels.

Its core objectives are:

  • Reinforcing Health 2020's strategic goals through knowledge sharing in healthy urban environments.
  • Generating and disseminating evidence to promote healthy urban environments.
  • Assessing the progress of Healthy Cities in implementing healthy urban environments.
  • Promoting education, training and knowledge exchange for professionals.
  • Advancing research in the field of healthy urban environments.
  • Building partnerships with major organisations including universities and government agencies domestically and globally.
  • Developing and promoting decision-making tools for built environment and public health practitioners in the realm of healthy urban environments.
