Biggar Archaeology Group (BAG)

Active

Description

Biggar Archaeology Group is a volunteer archaeology group working in Biggar and Upper Clydesdale in South Lanarkshire, running since 1981. It carries out excavation, survey and fieldwalking, and publishes its own reports: around seventy-five excavation and survey reports are available through its website, the earliest from the 1990s and the most recent dated March 2026. Its projects have included prehistoric settlement sites, Roman and medieval remains and post-medieval bastle houses, and its finds and interpretation are displayed at Biggar Museum. The group works with the Peeblesshire Archaeological Society and South Lanarkshire Council on churchyard and burial ground surveys, and its fieldwork has been supported over the years by grants from local authorities, community bodies and the national heritage agency.
