The Whithorn Trust

Active

Description

The Whithorn Trust is a charity at Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway, set up in 1986 as a direct consequence of an archaeological excavation at Whithorn two years earlier. Since 2025 it has run the Whithorn and Machars Archaeology Project, a continuing programme of excavation and survey with recent work at Sinniness, Back Bay and Port Castle, including a second phase at Port Castle in 2026; results from the Sinniness excavation are due in the Transactions of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society. The project succeeds an earlier LiDAR survey, now complete. The Trust also runs a museum, and reports an excavation archive of over 42,000 items from its digs of the 1980s and 1990s, now stored off site at Stranraer Museum; a funded project in 2018 and 2019 applied radiocarbon dating and stable isotope analysis to human remains in that collection. The Trust is one of five named holders of the Archaeology Collection of Dumfries and Galloway Council, a Recognised Collection of National Significance.
