Description

The Centre for Research in Digital Education is a research centre of the University of Edinburgh, based jointly in the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the Moray House School of Education and Sport. In its own words it researches, teaches and conducts knowledge exchange in areas relating to digital education, including policy, practice, artificial intelligence and education futures.

Its work is organised into five research themes, each with its own co-director. Cultures and Futures examines the present and future connections between digital technologies and their cultural contexts, covering interdisciplinary knowledge cultures, learning spaces, cultural heritage and the creative industries. Children and Technology studies how children's interaction with technology shapes thinking, feeling, communication and learning. Data Society develops methodologies for acting on the datafication of education, working from a critical understanding of how data, algorithms, artificial intelligence and other automated technologies shape teaching, learning, educational governance and citizenship. Data Education in Schools is an eight-year programme funded by the UK and Scottish governments through the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, developing data literacy and artificial intelligence literacy among learners aged 3 to 18 across six local authorities. Digital Education in the Global South examines the political economies of educational technology use, with a particular focus on refugee education, and named project work extending to sub-Saharan Africa.

The centre teaches an MSc Digital Education, an MSc Education Futures and an undergraduate MA Interdisciplinary Futures, runs a public seminar series, and maintains an engagement programme working across finance, technology, cultural heritage and international development. Its named engagement partners include Tate, the National Galleries of Scotland, National Museums Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, the Imperial War Museum, the Fruitmarket Gallery, the Edinburgh Art Festival and the World Bank. The centre publishes a set of six co-designed principles for socially responsible digital education, first announced in a centre report in 2024.
