Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI)

Description

The Edinburgh Futures Institute challenges, creates, and makes change happen. The Institute is focused on tackling today’s increasingly complex issues by bringing people and disciplines together to spark the unexpected and make better futures possible. It is creating a new environment for learning, teaching, research, and innovation, side-by-side with students, communities, businesses, and industry.

The Institute organises much of its research through named clusters that draw their members from across the University's schools, eight of them at present: artificial intelligence and government; children, interaction and design; creativity, artificial intelligence and the human; critical data studies; digital cultural heritage; digital economy and society; game worlds; and media and communications. Cluster membership is deliberately mixed, spanning Edinburgh College of Art, the School of Social and Political Science, Literatures, Languages and Cultures, Informatics, Law and Moray House School of Education and Sport, with individual clusters ranging from around a dozen members to around eighty. The clusters share a programme of research-methods training that covers text mining, optical character recognition, network analysis, working with named places and building gazetteers, and the use of large language models, and several also run their own seminar series, reading groups and networking events.
