Faclair na Gàidhlig

Description

Faclair na Gàidhlig is an inter-university project building a historical dictionary of Scottish Gaelic on the model of the great historical dictionaries of other European languages, tracing the language from its earliest manuscript sources to the present day. It is led from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, working with the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Strathclyde, and was formally constituted as a centre, Ionad Faclair na Gàidhlig, in September 2023.

Editorial work draws its evidence from Corpas na Gàidhlig, the corpus digitised by the Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic at Glasgow, and entries are compiled using bespoke in-house software named Meanma. The project is funded by the Scottish Funding Council and Bòrd na Gàidhlig under a five-year business plan running to 2028.
