Bòrd na Gàidhlig
ActiveDescription
Bòrd na Gàidhlig is the principal public body in Scotland responsible for promoting the development of Gaelic, including advising Scottish Ministers on Gaelic issues. Its stated aim is for Gaelic to be seen and heard daily across Scotland and recognised as an integral part of Scottish life and a national cultural and economic asset. Established as a public body under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, it is responsible for preserving Gaelic as an official language enjoying equal respect with English. Its statutory duties include preparing and steering the National Gaelic Language Plan every five years, advising on Gaelic and Gaelic education, providing guidance to public bodies on Gaelic Language Plans, and monitoring implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The Board commissions and supports research into Gaelic use, learning and promotion, with published reports spanning Gaelic-medium education, sociolinguistic attitudes, corpus planning, terminology, the Gaelic economy and cultural history. It administers a range of grant schemes and funds national delivery partner organisations working across Gaelic language, literature, publishing, music, arts, drama and heritage.
