Hacio'r Iaith

Inactive (Legacy record)

Please note that this is a legacy entry reflecting past infrastructure activity and contributions. It is not currently active.

Description

Hacio'r Iaith (hack the language) was a grassroots, volunteer-run Welsh-language technology community and unconference series, founded in 2010 and active across Wales in Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Bangor. It brought together Welsh speakers, learners and technologists to explore how digital technology relates to and supports the Welsh language, running BarCamp and hack-day-style events, a blog and a podcast, with sessions held through the medium of Welsh. It covered localisation, machine translation, open data, open source software, digital tools and Welsh-language use online, working with partners including Bangor University's Language Technologies Unit and the National Library of Wales. An unregistered volunteer initiative, its own activity wound down after 2023, though the events it helped seed have continued under other auspices.
