Canolfan Bedwyr: Bangor University's Centre for Welsh Language Services, Research and Technology
Description
Canolfan Bedwyr is Bangor University’s innovative centre for Welsh Language services, research and technology.
Founded in 1996, it has evolved over the years to become the focal point of the University’s aspirations in terms of the Welsh language.
Its core mission is to support two of Bangor University’s key strategic aims:
- to enhance the University’s Welsh medium academic provision and Welsh language services;
- to enhance the use of Welsh in the University and the region.
In this respect, Canolfan Bedwyr is a university department that has a dual focus. Whilst its core functions, such as policy development, translation and language courses are geared towards serving the university’s internal needs, the centre also places great store on sharing its unique expertise. Its work in developing software solutions, terminology and bespoke language courses and resources is highly valued by other organizations and institutions looking to develop their own use of the Welsh language.
The centre’s work in promoting and facilitating the use of Welsh was highlighted by the Quality Assurance Agency in a recent institutional review and also recognised by an award from the Institute of Welsh Affairs.
