The National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru)
ActiveDescription
The National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru) is the national library of Wales, based in Aberystwyth. Opened in 1907, it is a body incorporated by Royal Charter, a registered charity, and a Welsh Government Sponsored Body. As a legal deposit library it collects, preserves and provides access to rare books, manuscripts, archives, newspapers, maps, photographs, works of art, film, video and sound recordings documenting the culture and heritage of Wales and the Celtic nations. Its activities include collection care and conservation, mass digitisation, digital preservation, exhibitions, education services and public engagement. Supporting research is a core part of its mission: through its Research Programme it works on the use, impact and development of digital collections and digital scholarship, on the interpretation and re-interpretation of its collections, and on methodologies and professional practice across libraries, archives, maps, conservation, photographs and audio-visual material. It collaborates with universities and research organisations, co-supervises collaborative doctoral studentships, and is a partner in the Welsh Culture and Heritage Collaborative Doctoral Partnership consortium funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council together with Amgueddfa Cymru (Museum Wales) and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. It also generates income through commercial services (material reproduction, digitisation and conservation, venue and event hire, filming and collection licensing, a shop and a café) and is supported by public donations and legacies. Follow the library on Bluesky and YouTube.
