Archaeology and Environment Science Project (AEonS), Orkney
ActiveDescription
The Archaeology and Environment Science Project (AEonS) is a Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS) facility led by the University of the Highlands and Islands and based in Orkney. It is establishing specialist environmental archaeology laboratories for the scientific study of plant and animal remains, together with ancient soils and sediments fundamental to understanding the past, and new imaging equipment for creating digital records of archaeological artefacts. Although based in Orkney, the facility is designed as a central research hub, with a mobile laboratory supporting research fieldwork across Scotland, enabling partners, visiting researchers, museums, commercial units, community groups and UHI students to access its equipment and expertise.
AEonS is delivered in partnership with a consortium of Scottish and UK heritage and research organisations. It is funded by the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council through the UKRI Infrastructure Fund, as part of the RICHeS programme.
