Description
The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute is devoted to enhancing the understanding of historical environments by generating, interpreting, and disseminating archaeological knowledge. This international centre of excellence stands unique in Scotland by blending teaching, academic research, and commercial applied research, housed within unparalleled heritage landscapes.
Based in Orkney Mainland with presence in Shetland and the Western Isles, the institute also maintains a commercial division, ORCA, offering professional archaeological and heritage services to Northern Scotland. This synergy offers students a unique experience of practical archaeology and fosters world-class archaeological research.
The institute conducts internationally significant research within the region and beyond, with ongoing projects in locales as distant as Easter Island and The Cook Islands. Research covers diverse archaeological heritage, including Neolithic settlements, Iron Age brochs, Pictish and Viking settlements, and historical archaeology.
