CoSTAR Foresight Lab

Active

Description

The CoSTAR Foresight Lab, led by Goldsmiths, University of London, is the intelligence and futures lab of the CoSTAR Network, the United Kingdom's national research and development infrastructure for the creative industries. Its role is to capture and disseminate industry knowledge, trends and needs, present and future, collecting, synthesising and analysing data to provide intelligence, insight and foresight that informs research, innovation and investment. It researches the adoption, use and impact of new technologies across games, film, television, performance and digital entertainment, working through a foresight lens that looks ahead to advances in converged media production technologies and their policy implications, and an insight lens that tracks technology adoption, policy implementation and environmental, social and economic impacts. Three themes run across its work: artificial intelligence, production technologies and decarbonisation, with a creative-led approach to AI underpinned by ethics, safety, accessibility and responsibility, and direct engagement with UK government departments on AI, copyright and industrial strategy. It produces reports and publications, living data resources, policy guidance and market intelligence, including a multi-wave Creative Business Panel survey, and it collaborates with the four other CoSTAR labs (the National, Screen, Live and Realtime labs). It is funded through the UKRI Infrastructure Fund and delivered by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
