Blue Shield United Kingdom (Blue Shield UK / BSUK)
ActiveDescription
Blue Shield UK (BSUK) is the United Kingdom National Committee of the worldwide Blue Shield movement and a UK registered charity dedicated to protecting heritage in crisis (in armed conflict, disaster and emergency) across the UK and its dependencies. It supports heritage professionals, UK government and the UK's armed forces to protect cultural property. Its work is a partnership between heritage professionals, lawyers, government staff, armed forces, emergency services and academics, together with the UK branches (or representatives) of its founding partners: the International Council on Archives (ICA), the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). The Committee's charitable mission is to promote the protection of the world's cultural property for the public benefit (cultural and natural, tangible and intangible) in the event of armed conflict, natural or human-made disaster; to encourage and assist UK national and devolved governments, the armed forces and security services, and owners and managers of cultural property to prepare for its protection; to provide support and advice on national and international laws relating to cultural property in armed conflict, disasters and emergencies; to support those tackling illicit trafficking of cultural property; to raise public awareness and knowledge of cultural property protection; to promote research and training; and to advance national and international collaboration, including with the wider Blue Shield network. Governed by trustees, its expert members contribute to Expert Working Groups covering Climate Change, Conflict & Military Activity, Emergency Planning & Response, Illicit Trafficking, Intangible Cultural Heritage and Underwater Heritage.
