Historic England
ActiveDescription
Historic England is the public body that works with people and organisations across England to discover, protect, and bring new life to the shared historic environment. It provides advice, knowledge, support, and services to ensure that England's history lives on and is valued.
The organisation protects, champions, and saves places that define England's national identity, working with communities and specialists to inspire interest, care, and conservation. Using cutting-edge science, research, and information, Historic England helps people manage historic places both physically and economically.
It shares knowledge through training, guidance, conservation advice, and access to resources including the Historic England Archive -- the largest national collection of records about the historic environment. Historic England manages the National Heritage List for England, which includes over 400,000 items ranging from prehistoric monuments to office blocks, battlefields, and parks.
Each year it advises on more than 20,000 applications for planning permission or listed building consent and provides grants to support the conservation of historic buildings, monuments, and landscapes. Since 2017, Historic England (jointly with English Heritage Trust) has held Independent Research Organisation (IRO) status, enabling it to apply for funding from UK Research and Innovation. It runs an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership programme and partners with multiple Doctoral Training Partnerships across the country.
