Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO)

Active

Description

The Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO) is a UK-wide professional association representing archaeologists working for local authorities and national parks. Formed in 1996 through a merger of the Association of County Archaeological Officers and Council of District Archaeological Officers, it originally represented archaeologists in England and Wales (with representation from Northern Ireland).

In 2006, ALGAO merged with the Association of Regional and Island Archaeologists (ARIA) to become ALGAO:UK, a fully UK-wide body. The Association's members are professional archaeologists employed by local authority heritage teams to advise on archaeological conservation and management, principally through the planning process.

ALGAO operates through three national associations (ALGAO:Cymru, ALGAO:England, and ALGAO:Scotland) overseen by a UK Executive Committee, and five specialist subject committees addressing Historic Environment Records, Planning and Legislation, Countryside, Urban, and Maritime issues.

Its four key objectives are: to provide a strong voice for local authority historic environment services and promote their role within local government; to ensure local government historic environment services are included within policy for culture and education; to ensure that policy aims to improve the sustainable management of the historic environment; and to promote the development of high standards in the historic environment profession.
