History of Education Society (HES)
ActiveDescription
The History of Education Society (UK) brings together researchers, teachers and students in the history of education. Its membership is open to anyone with an interest in research, teaching and/or public engagement with the history of education, and its annual three-day conference attracts historical researchers in universities, libraries, archives and museums, as well as independent researchers. Founded in 1967 and now a registered charity, it aims to promote the study and teaching of the history of education; to encourage and support research and new researchers in the field; to represent the interests of the field; to promote an informed public understanding of the history of education; to provide collaboration and exchange among those interested in the history of education in Britain and around the world; to promote links with the study and teaching of history at all levels; and to promote the preservation of and facilitate access to primary sources in the history of education and features of educational heritage.
It sponsors the publication of two peer-reviewed journals, History of Education and History of Education Researcher, and, in partnership with the University of Exeter, publishes the Exe Libris Database, an online bibliography of scholarly works specialising in the history of education. Two book prizes are awarded every three years, and it funds fellowships, usually for those undertaking or recently completing a postgraduate degree, to establish a higher public profile for the Society and its publications, conferences and activities. It is keen to support students and early career researchers: students can join at a reduced rate and are eligible to apply for bursaries to attend its annual conference, and it holds an annual postgraduate event. Its Executive Committee is made up of elected members, the editors of its two journals and its early career fellows.
Its online resources include a digital archive of History of Education Researcher and its earlier Bulletin, from 1968, and the Lists of Theses and Dissertations in the History of Education, 1900-1990.
