Heritage Innovations Laboratory Oxford (HILO)
ActiveDescription
Heritage Innovations Laboratory Oxford (HILO) is an initiative involving an interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners based at the University of Oxford. Its mission is to explore and trial new ways of working, enabling University researchers to co-develop innovative, evidence-based solutions with partners across the heritage sector. It is led by and includes researchers from the School of Geography and the Environment, and sits within a wider constellation of heritage-related researchers and projects represented by the Oxford University Heritage Network. It develops collaborative programmes, designed to facilitate the wider uptake of research evidence by the heritage sector, on challenges such as predicting and managing risk to the fabric of built heritage (using data-informed digital twins), enhancing public engagement with heritage, assessing the carbon footprint of heritage sites and heritage organisations, and quantifying the ecosystem services provided by built heritage. Its flagship collaboration is with Blenheim Palace, where it runs research programmes designed to assist in developing data-forward solutions for predicting the failure of stone in the fabric of the building. It is a partner in Future Lab, a three-year initiative from Historic Buildings & Places, and in Creating Connections, an 18-month Heritage Alliance project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, where it works with the Alliance on an academic matchmaking pilot between heritage organisations and university teams. HILO is funded primarily by the University’s Strategic Innovation Fund, with additional funding from the Blenheim Estate.
