Edinburgh Historical Reconstruction Lab
ActiveDescription
The Edinburgh Historical Reconstruction Lab is a space for teaching, researching and sharing knowledge through hands-on reconstruction. It is based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and forms part of the Centre for Historical Reconstruction Research. The main lab is set up like a kitchen, with mortars and pestles, heat sources, spoons, bowls, pans and a sink, for research and teaching into premodern recipes with food or cosmetic-grade materials, and it can accommodate up to 15 students for teaching. Students, Edinburgh academics and visiting scholars can also request access to the Archaeology Labs, with a fume hood, analytical processing equipment and 3D scanning and printing, and Edinburgh College of Art facilities are available to Centre members and affiliates on request and depending on availability. The lab offers historical consultancy, particularly on medieval, Renaissance and early modern cosmetics, hygiene, haircare, medicine and domestic cleanliness, workshops for cultural and educational groups and a Visiting Fellows scheme, and its projects include one with the Science Museum, London, to run workshops related to the museum’s early modern pharmacy, cosmetic and hygiene collections.
