Data Education in Schools
ActiveDescription
The Data Education in Schools programme was established in 2019 with an eight-year grant from the Scottish and UK governments, and is one of the research areas of the Centre for Research in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh. Its mission was to support the development of data literacies and skills for learners and educators in the Edinburgh and South East Scotland city region, and the Centre describes it as a project that aims to reach all learners within the six local authorities of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. The programme creates and provides free-to-download teaching resources as well as running professional learning programmes for primary and secondary teachers, and since 2024 much of its work has included supporting teachers to understand generative AI and its impact on education and learning. Its dedicated website TRAILS.scot (Teaching Responsible AI Literacy in Schools), launched in 2025 as a repository of teaching materials that focus on AI literacy, was developed in partnership with the Scottish Government, Education Scotland and the SQA, with funding from Responsible AI UK (that funding ended in 2025) and the Scottish Government. In 2026 the team was selected to host the thematic hub for Digital and AI literacy within the Centre for Teaching Excellence, extending its support to all teachers across Scotland.
