Language Acts and Worldmaking
ActiveDescription
Language Acts and Worldmaking is a research centre in the Global Cultures Institute at King's College London, and grew out of the Language Acts and Worldmaking flagship project funded by the AHRC Open World Research Initiative from 2016 to 2021. Its work aims to regenerate and transform modern language learning by foregrounding language's power to shape how people live and make their worlds. It examines language as a material and historical force which acts as the means by which individuals construct their personal, local, transnational and spiritual identities, a process the centre calls worldmaking. The initial case study for the project was Iberia, its global empires and contact zones, which stretch across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The centre runs the Language Debates series, and its Language Acts and Worldmaking book series appears with John Murray Press.
