Description

The Global Cultures Institute at King's College London starts from what it describes as a moment of polarising cultural division and asks how routes can be found around, through or across cultural boundaries, pursuing these questions through research, education, and public and community engagement. Created in 2023 as one of the new interdisciplinary institutes at King's, alongside the Digital Futures Institute, it brings together four research centres: Language Acts and Worldmaking, Queer@King's, King's Past and the King's Race Research Network.

The institute runs an annual Institute Fellowship that gives King's academics time to pursue a research project or to develop initial work into larger grant applications, with cohorts every year since 2023-24, and an Activist-in-Residence programme that brings community organisers, artists and advocates into dialogue with academics, funded from 2023 to 2025 by the AHRC Impact Acceleration Account and by the institute itself from 2026. It also runs two event series, How We Argue and the Global Cultures Institute Annual Lectures.
