Early Modern Scholars of Colour Network (EMSOC)

Active

Description

The Early Modern Scholars of Colour Network (EMSOC) is an anti-racist collective that aims to promote, support and foster anti-racism as well as intellectual and academic inclusivity in Shakespeare, Early Modern Studies and related disciplines in the UK and around the world. It responds to what it describes as a significant underrepresentation of faculty of colour employed in permanent positions in UK universities in Shakespeare and Early Modern Studies, and works to nurture and enable students, early career researchers and academics of colour to develop academic and pedagogic networks. Its three stated aims are anti-racist advocacy, professional development, and mentorship and community. The network is jointly managed by King's College London and Shakespeare's Globe, with a steering committee that also draws on University College London, the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham and Royal Holloway, University of London. Its mentoring scheme, run in partnership with the Society for Renaissance Studies, first ran in 2023, and in September 2025 the two bodies held a joint symposium at Liverpool John Moores University.
