Friends of the Women's Library (FoTWL)

The Friends of the Women's Library (FoTWL) is an independent Friends' group that, since the late 1970s, has supported The Women's Library, now at LSE Library, through funding acquisitions, digitisation and conservation projects, and by promoting its collections through, for example, its regular Talks programme. The Women's Library was established by former suffragists in 1926 as the Women's Service Library. The Friends were formally constituted in January 1978 as the Friends of the Fawcett Library, gained charity status in January 1979 and took their present name in 2002, when the Library itself was renamed.
The Friends fund acquisitions for the Library's collections, including two purchases in 2025, and offer two annual essay prizes for LSE dissertations that use the Women's Library's collections. From 2023 to 2025 they ran an oral history project recording 14 interviews with veterans of the Movement for the Ordination of Women campaign; the collection is now on the LSE Digital Library.
