Spineless Wonders

Spineless Wonders is an international network of artists, writers, academics and librarians, creating and researching small press publications including artists’ books. Hosted by the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL and established in 2020, it brings together artists, writers, librarians and researchers across the UK to foreground collections of small press publications, artists’ books and other ephemera, with the aims of inspiring the making of new publications, encouraging research and public engagement. It has organised one-day research events with a range of presentations and speakers, focusing on specific research themes and on marginalised university and public collections, held in several locations and linked online, with dated events from November 2021 to May 2026. Its members include the Institute of English Studies at the School of Advanced Study, UCL Special Collections, Senate House Library, art schools at Aberystwyth, Dundee and Manchester Metropolitan universities, and Stanford University’s Department of English. The network’s Knowledge Base gathers digitised items, bibliographies and resources from Senate House Library’s special collections and UCL’s Small Press Collection.
