Institute of English Studies (IES)

Description

The Institute of English Studies (IES) is a globally renowned research centre that specialises in the history of the book, manuscript and print studies, textual scholarship, digital editing, and new critical approaches to literary history. It offers postgraduate programmes, summer schools, and short courses. The institute hosts significant collaborative research projects, provides research training in book history and palaeography, and facilitates innovative research across all areas of English Studies.

The IES is one of nine member institutes of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London. It originated as the Centre for English Studies in 1991 and became a program of the School of Advanced Study in 1994. On 2 December 1998, the University Council conferred institute status upon it, and it officially became the Institute of English Studies on 1 January 1999. Since then, it has experienced substantial growth, now organizing over 50 events annually, including research seminars, lectures, conferences, short courses, and a series of international summer schools held for six weeks each summer. Additionally, the institute manages major externally funded research programs and postgraduate degrees.

The mission of the IES is as follows:

  • To promote research in English Studies to academic communities in London, nationally, and internationally.
  • To engage with and support the discipline of English Studies through collaborations with the English Association and University English, as well as partnerships with institutions such as the University of East Anglia and Newcastle University.
  • To support early career scholars and professional development through an MA program, Summer Schools, postgraduate program, research training, doctoral training partnerships such as LAHP, links with cultural institutions and the book trade, and cross-institutional work within the School.
  • To provide opportunities for supporting the research of scholars at all stages of their careers through the IES Fellowship program.
  • To support research communities in English Studies through conferences, seminar series, workshops, and events, with a particular focus on emerging fields of study and the core research areas of the Institute: texts and technologies, archives, authors, collections, and reading and interpretation.
  • To contribute to the public understanding of research in English Studies through public events and collaborations with cultural institutions. This also includes participation in the School's Being Human festival and the endeavors of the Professor in the Public Understanding of the Humanities, Sarah Churchwell.
