Decolonising the Discipline Working Group
Description
The collaborative initiative known as "Decolonising the Discipline" is a joint effort by colleagues at the English Association, the Institute of English Studies, the University of East Anglia, the Postcolonial Studies Association, and University English. They extend an invitation to academics from various disciplines within English Studies in the UK to join in establishing a network of decolonising practitioners. This network aims to facilitate the gathering and sharing of experiences and ideas, ultimately leading to practical change.
The initiative acknowledges that current curricula, pedagogy, and research are rooted in colonial knowledge systems that perpetuate hierarchies based on race, class, and gender. Its objectives include:
- Engaging in discussions regarding not only the content of what is taught and studied, but also the methods of teaching and studying.
- Creating platforms for comprehensive conversations within the discipline.
- Promoting and supporting collaborative action across English literature, language, and creative writing.
