The Slade Art+Tech Research Lab at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, focuses on computational art and cultural practices: facilitating research and research-based teaching in art and technology through practice-based approaches; fostering interdisciplinary research through collaboration with other UCL departments and with institutions and communities across the UK and internationally; and enabling public engagement to disseminate research. It frames this work against the power asymmetries that follow as everyday life is increasingly ordered through algorithmic governance, centralised platforms and technological hegemonies, and states a five-year aim to develop research into the centrality of technology, particularly disruptive technologies that emphasise diversity, power and engagement, to be explored through computational art practice. Based at the Slade Studio at UCL East and running since 2025 with support from UCL’s Research Capital Investment Fund, the Lab provides access to the facilities and technologies needed for work at the intersection of art and technology, building on the Slade’s engagement with computers, electronic media and fine art since the 1970s.
