Description

The Charles Peake Ulysses Seminar is devoted to the line-by-line reading and analysis of James Joyce's Ulysses. Founded in 1986, it reads the novel closely one episode at a time, sometimes drawing on historical evidence and draft sources to examine how the book was composed, and since its founding it has read most episodes of the novel. It has acted as a focal point for academic researchers and postgraduate students with research interests in Joyce across London and the south-east and beyond. The seminar meets once a month in term time, on Friday evenings, at Senate House, and is listed among the seminars of the Institute of English Studies; its convenor is based at Birkbeck, University of London. Members of the seminar have contributed to a new edition of Joyce's works to be published by Penguin in 2026, and the seminar marks its fortieth year with a symposium, Reading Joyce in History, on 10 October 2026.
