Health and Humanities Research Forum (HHRF)

Description

The Health and Humanities Research Forum (HHRF) brings together people from across Queen Mary University of London who are engaging critically with the idea of health. It supports research that frames health and healthcare as social, political and economic concepts, and that understands medicine as culturally situated. It is also a home for research that foregrounds experiences of disability, race, gender, ageing, neurodiversity and marginalisation in healthcare. Researchers from across the humanities, social sciences and medicine are exploring these themes using a rich array of approaches; the forum aims to bring this work into view, create a collegiate community and cultivate a research culture around the health humanities.

The forum is one of the projects and programmes of the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS), and its purpose is to reach across disciplinary boundaries at Queen Mary to promote dialogue and collaboration. Its inaugural event took place in May 2024 in the Barts Pathology Museum, and it has since held workshops and discussions, among them Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Gut Health: Historical and Contemporary Insights in June 2025. In 2026 it holds Queen Mary CIRCLE funding for a project entitled Health Inequalities: Towards a Reparative Glossary, with several events planned over the year.
