Description

The Centre for Philosophy of Education, in the Department of Education, Practice and Society at the UCL Institute of Education, draws together research in philosophy of education across the Institute, which has included philosophy in its work since it was founded. Its members explore a range of philosophical approaches to topics such as pedagogy, the curriculum, democracy and citizenship, human rights, inclusive education, moral agency, new technology and mental health, treating practical questions in education as routes into enquiry about knowledge, the just society and the good life. The centre runs a weekly Philosophy of Education Research Seminar with the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain on Wednesday evenings in term time, and its public engagement has included a British Society of Aesthetics conference held at UCL in February 2025. It supports doctoral researchers through termly research days with reading sessions and opportunities to present work, alongside the Doctoral School's research training programme and the EdD programme. Members are active in international organisations in the field, including the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, the International Network of Philosophy of Education and the Philosophy of Education Society of North America.
