Description

The Centre for Humanities brings together colleagues in the Department of Education, Practice and Society at the UCL Institute of Education who work across the humanities, including history, philosophy, anthropology, the arts and literature. Formed in 2026, it draws together the Institute's long-standing research in the history and philosophy of education and includes two centres, the International Centre for Historical Research in Education (ICHRE) and the Centre for Philosophy of Education. Its members work closely with colleagues across the Institute and UCL, particularly Library, Culture, Collections and Open Science (LCOSS), and the centre reports links with learned societies in the UK and internationally. Current and recent projects include histories of the School Meals Service and of student life in London, the preservation of charity and voluntary sector archives, early years pedagogy and film culture, and the centre states a commitment to public engagement and to partnership with schools, voluntary organisations and communities. Colleagues teach on UCL programmes including the Philosophy of Education MA and the Public History MA, and the centre welcomes doctoral students across its research areas. Its events listing draws on a programme shared with the Institute and the department, and most of the listed events also appear under ICHRE.
