Mapping Museums Lab (MMLab)

Description

The Mapping Museums Lab is a research lab at Birkbeck, University of London, which it says is also based at King's College London, and it studies UK museums from 1960 onwards. Working across computer science, data science, geography and museum studies, it collects, classifies and analyses incomplete museum data to study the make-up of the museum sector, the history and purpose of museums, and where culture is located. The lab maintains the Mapping Museums Database, a publicly available longitudinal dataset that it reports covers more than 4,000 UK museums, with information on accreditation, governance, location, size, subject, and opening and closure dates. Its projects have included a history and geography of the UK's independent museum sector, a study of UK museums during the pandemic, research on museum closure in the UK from 2000 to 2025, and the Museum Analytics conference series.
