The Institute of Global Challenges and Cultures is one of seven research and innovation institutes launched together by De Montfort University on 31 March 2025. It is a multidisciplinary institute working in history, English literature and language, creative writing, media, politics and international relations, and material, textual and visual cultures.
Its research is organised in two clusters, Migration, Integration and Conflict, and Global Cultures: Material, Textual and Visual. The institute states an aim of contributing to social, economic, cultural and environmental wellbeing, using both disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches.
The institute reports that in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, 86 per cent of its research in the unit for English language and literature and 72 per cent in the unit for history were assessed as internationally excellent or world leading. Its members have carried out consultancy or collaborative work with governmental, cultural, third sector and international organisations including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Ministry of Defence, Historic England, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the United Nations and the House of Lords, and with broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, Al Jazeera and CNN.
