The Tweeddale Society

Active

Description

The Tweeddale Society is a local history and cultural society based in Peebles, founded in 1913 as a county association for the study of history and natural science. It was suspended during the Second World War and revived in 1967 with the support of the University of Edinburgh's extra-mural department. The society runs a winter programme of monthly evening lectures at the Eastgate Theatre, together with summer outings and two named memorial lectures, one of them on archaeology and presented jointly with the Peeblesshire Archaeological Society, which chooses the speaker in alternate years. Its own projects have included an oral history of Peebles published in 2005, a centenary history of the society, a survey of local place names, an exhibition of old maps of Tweeddale and help compiling an inventory of public records predating the 1975 local government reorganisation. The society describes itself as often consulted on local historical questions by other organisations, students and people researching Borders family connections, and it is building an archive of recordings of its talks from 2000 onwards, available on its YouTube channel.
