Hebrides People (Northton Heritage Trust)

Description

Hebrides People is a genealogical and archival research service on the Isle of Harris, run by the Northton Heritage Trust, a community benefit society and registered Scottish charity. Its work rests on an archive assembled over six decades from written records and Gaelic oral tradition, now held as a searchable online database of almost 110,000 people from the Western Isles covering the mid-1700s to 1920. The trust's Cò Leis Thu? service produces commissioned family histories from that archive, and it publishes its own register series on emigration from the Western Isles to Canada and Australia. Its visitor centre closed in August 2026 for a redevelopment reported at 8.25 million pounds, with reopening reported for spring 2028, and the trust states that the genealogy service and online bookshop continue throughout.
