Stranraer and District Local History Trust

Description

Stranraer and District Local History Trust is a volunteer local history body for Stranraer and Wigtownshire in Dumfries and Galloway, set up in 1998 and registered as a Scottish charity the same year. Its main work is publishing: since 1998 it has produced around forty books on the people, places and history of the district, of which seventeen are in print, and it reports cumulative sales of more than 40,000 copies.

It holds an audio archive of 45 recorded interviews with local residents, most of the dated recordings made between 1999 and 2015, kept at Stranraer Library for public access, and it donated the collection to the University of Edinburgh's Regional Ethnology of Scotland Project, which has put most of the recordings online. It also holds a photographic archive that has fed its publications, has supported archaeological research, historic walks and commemorative plaques in the district alongside the local authority, and issues seasonal newsletters. Membership is by annual subscription.
