Description

The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Natural Language Processing was a doctoral training centre at the University of Edinburgh, run jointly by the School of Informatics and the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. It commenced in September 2019 with funding from UK Research and Innovation through its constituent council the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and received funding for five cohorts over an eight-year programme. Its supervisory pool spanned both host schools and was organised across six named areas: natural language processing, spoken language processing, linguistics, psychology, design and human-computer interaction, and machine learning applications involving language.

The centre admitted its final cohort in 2023 and closed to new students, signposting applicants to the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Designing Responsible Natural Language Processing, a separately funded centre delivered through the Edinburgh Futures Institute, among other postgraduate options at the School of Informatics. Its site remains online as a record of the programme, listing five cohorts of doctoral researchers from 2019 to 2023. Industry and research partners included the Alan Turing Institute, the BBC, and a range of technology and language companies.
