Description
The Digital Departures Lab was one of the research labs of the Arts Lab in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Glasgow. Its stated remit was the untraditional or deviant use of digital media, across both practical and theoretical work, and it named as its areas of interest do-it-yourself and hacktivist approaches to digital technology, filmmaking that sought alternatives to digital cinema by repurposing the apparatus, the history of error and misuse in computing, and art-historical movements such as net art.
It set out four aims: to explore the creative potential of dominant media systems when they are repurposed or challenged, to investigate how deviant media practices open new research opportunities, to pursue the theoretical questions those practices raise, and to inquire into the history of misuse and hacking and into resistance to dominant media frameworks. It was led by three academic directors drawn from media technology and aesthetics, museum studies, and audiovisual composition.
Its activity included a launch showcase in October 2019 on live, algorithmic and data-driven art, an exhibition of African video games in 2019 supported by the University of Glasgow's Knowledge Exchange Fund and staged with the Africa in Motion Film Festival, a standing online reading group on cultural techniques, a funded virtual residency running from April to September 2021 on making as an act of self-care and repair, and a co-hosted interview series on programmable nature with the Dear Green Bothy, which closed in January 2022. No later activity has been traced.
