Immersive Experiences Lab, Glasgow (IELab)

Description

The Immersive Experiences Lab (IELab) is a research lab within the Arts Lab at the University of Glasgow. It brings together researchers and practitioners working on immersive experience across performance, sound, screen and digital media, with interests including sound spatialisation, human perception and haptic imagery, and digital care in relation to technology. The lab is run by a group of co-directors drawn from across the humanities and the creative arts, and its events are free and open to members.

Its public programme has run since 2018 and includes seminars, workshops, exhibitions and performances. In 2025 the lab held a day-long event on digital disengagement and the experience of slowing down and opting out in immersive media, presented in partnership with a Glasgow festival of contemporary performance and involving an immersive theatre company, a keynote from another Scottish university and contributions from artist-researchers; a separate panel later that year examined the politics of immersive performance, again presented with the same festival partnership. The lab also maintains a showcase of research projects from its community and a newsletter archive.
