The Textual Editing Lab (TELab) is a research lab within the Arts Lab at the University of Glasgow. It connects researchers, archivists, digital developers, artists, professionals and students engaged with textual editing, sharing scholarly practice and encouraging innovation and collaboration. The lab runs a programme of workshops, talks and project demonstrations, and circulates information about funding opportunities and new developments in text editing to its members.
Its dated programme runs continuously from 2018 and covers scholarly and digital editing practice: editing single volumes and collected works, paratexts, inscriptions, palimpsests and other complex manuscripts, and annotated digital editions built with IIIF. A recurring strand since 2023 has centred on Transkribus, a platform for artificial-intelligence-assisted recognition of handwritten and printed text, in sessions ranging from introductory workshops to a showcase with visiting platform developers. Events scheduled into November 2026 include a session on what a very large scale digital editing project teaches about the practice, possibilities and future of textual editing.
