Regulation and Design Lab (RAD Lab)
ActiveDescription
The Regulation and Design Lab is an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Edinburgh examining how law and regulation should be accounted for in the design of human-technology interactions, bringing together technology law, human-computer interaction and design research. It explores the socio-technical impacts and legal risks of emerging technologies against a changing regulatory backdrop, using creative and design-led methods. Its stated interests include the right to repair for consumer smart devices, surveillance in smart cities, privacy and security by design, governance of the internet of things and of artificial intelligence, the ethical and legal aspects of biometrics and affective computing, design tools for reflecting on law and ethics, and smart-home cybersecurity. The lab began in 2023 and runs its own talks series, workshops and project programme, with work supported through a series of EPSRC and ESRC grants including the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems governance node. It is hosted by the Institute for Design Informatics, and also names the School of Law and the Edinburgh Futures Institute among its university homes.
