Institute for Design Informatics
ActiveDescription
The Institute for Design Informatics is a joint institute between Edinburgh College of Art and the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, bringing design and data together. Its mission is to help create a world that is socially just, where people live well with agency and autonomy, and can adapt how they live so that the planet flourishes. It seeks a transformational impact on society by creating alternatives to dominant models of technology design and development, and by shaping ethical and responsible data futures through applied research and practice.
Guided by its motto of design for, with and by data, the Institute designs research products, prototypes and experiences underpinned by data, creates new methods and techniques that bring data into design processes, and examines the agency, autonomy and power of data in how systems are designed and experienced. Its work spans technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, distributed ledgers, open data, robotics, the internet of things, biosensing and language models, explored across domains such as health and care, the creative industries, cultural heritage, financial services and environmental sustainability. Uniting all of it is a deep engagement with the data underpinning these technologies, and the use of design and creative approaches to materialise the ideas, implications and complexity of these systems.
The Institute is on Bluesky.
