Data Civics Observatory

Description

The Data Civics Observatory is a research unit at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, University of Edinburgh, concerned with how places, and the people, institutions and infrastructures that make them, can be represented through mixed and experimental digital methods. It works with communities and organisations on the edges of Edinburgh, particularly the Granton Waterfront area, using platform and social media data, digital ethnography, film, photography and exhibition work to help them represent their own diversity and expertise. Its projects include a photographic and archival civicscope of Granton, participatory research supporting local acceleration in the Granton Waterfront, knowledge exchange with community leadership in north Edinburgh, and work on institutional investment in the built environment. The observatory takes its approach from the civic and sociological tradition of Patrick Geddes, and runs a seminar and public lecture programme in collaboration with a postgraduate-run research network.
