Digital Cultural Heritage, Edinburgh

Active

Description

Digital Cultural Heritage is an interdisciplinary research cluster within the Edinburgh Futures Institute at the University of Edinburgh, one of eight research clusters the institute lists, bringing together researchers from across the university who analyse and develop new approaches to the relationships between data, digital technology and cultural heritage, addressing both tangible and intangible heritage. Its work is organised into six research areas: copyright, intellectual property and access; digital documentation; tourism and heritage; geospatial data and heritage; digital engagement, learning and participation; and working with digital archives and collections. Eleven projects are listed under the cluster, among them handwriting recognition for Scottish Gaelic, computational approaches to exhibition scholarship, research on access to online cultural heritage, and heritage projects with museum, gallery, archive and university partners in the UK, Ireland and the United States, drawing on methods including text mining, geographic information systems, digital documentation and curatorial practice. In June 2026 the cluster co-organised GLAM Labs Futures, a two-day international event in Edinburgh held with the International GLAM Labs Community on the future of experimental reuse of digital collections and data. It also works with the Digital Cultural Heritage Research Network, launched in 2016, whose membership spans the higher education and GLAM sectors.
