Building a Transnational Community of Practice
ActiveDescription
Building a Transnational Community of Practice is a collaborative project supporting early-career and mid-career researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean in journal publishing and wider career development. It brings together partners from universities in the UK, Jamaica, El Salvador, Peru and Colombia with extensive publishing and editorial experience to develop the programme, and works with mid-career and senior scholars and journal editors to take participants through writing a journal article, working with feedback, turning a draft into a manuscript and submitting it to a high-impact journal.
Training was delivered through in-person workshops held in 2024 in Jamaica, San Salvador, Lima and Bogota, and through a one-to-one mentoring scheme engaging established scholars based in the UK, elsewhere in Europe, Latin America and the United States. Bilingual training resources produced across the four workshops are published openly for researchers who wish to train themselves or run their own sessions, alongside an open-access digital training module made available by the School of Advanced Study.
Discussion of the geopolitics of knowledge, and of the structural barriers facing scholars in Latin America and the Caribbean across the humanities and social sciences, runs through every project activity, with the aim of setting out recommendations for journal publishers and editors on more inclusive practice. The project is funded by the British Academy's International Writing Workshops 2022 Programme, supported under the UK Government's Global Challenges Research Fund.
