Extant
ActiveDescription
Extant is the UK's leading professional performing arts company of and for visually impaired artists and theatre practitioners, founded in 1997 by Dr Maria Oshodi and based in Brixton in London. A registered charity, it produces touring experimental theatre and conducts academic performance research, while developing blind and partially sighted artists through commissions, training, mentoring and participation. It also delivers a wide range of access consultation and training based on its pioneering practice in access aesthetics, including the Enhance programme, which supports theatre companies and venues in making their work accessible to visually impaired audiences. Its work explores visual impairment as a source of creativity, using haptic and multisensory performance technologies and integrated audio description. It has been an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation since 2010 and is now pioneering disability organisational dramaturgy to support the next generation of visually impaired arts leaders.
